EXP
Created for Sony Entertainment, EXP was an interactive live-action series designed to challenge the limitations of traditional branching narratives.
While the experience begins like a familiar “choose your own adventure”, with viewers controlling the actions and dialogue of the main character, Nolan, it quickly reveals something deeper. Nolan becomes aware he is being controlled, questioning decisions, resisting actions, and ultimately breaking the fourth wall to communicate directly with the viewer.
What if the character knew you were controlling him?
This shift transforms the experience from playing as a character to becoming part of the story itself. The relationship between viewer and protagonist becomes the core of the narrative, introducing moral tension and forcing the audience to confront the consequences of their choices.
BANANAS
At its core, EXP was built on the belief that interactivity only works when it’s fundamental to the idea, not layered on top. By making control itself the story, the project reframed interactive storytelling as something emotional, personal, and meaningful rather than mechanical.
Shane co-wrote and directed the pilot with his creative partner Marco Slavnic, establishing the tone and structure for the series. The project expanded into a full 10-episode arc, with Shane helping lead the writers’ room and shape the broader narrative.
